What is leisure? Why as a society are we so addicted to busyness? Are holidays really leisure, or a modern design that doesn’t really work?

For a long time I’ve had this idea of aiming for 20 hours of work per week.  In this modern world that seems and feels like a dream.  But is it?

Today I am thinking of this again as I came across Vacation is a poor substitute for leisure.

And how is this related to unschooling? Very much so, as kids or adults, we are pushed and pressured to be constantly productive. Constantly learning. Constantly in work.  If we are not in this state of ‘constant-ness’ then we are judged, put down, hounded, etc.

I know I feel like I’ve been on the go, non-stop for 20 years now.  That feels scary to put into words!

This lack of rest is not necessarily adding to productivity. Pang also makes the case that some of the most successful people in history did not work that much. Their lives were filled with leisure, activity, and rest.

Depending on how you slice it, on a typical day, Darwin did about 2.5 to 5 hours of work, took a nap, and went for a couple walks—yet he still had plenty of time to publish 19 books.

I would also probably add that Darwin probably had time to write books because he didn’t waste his time away on social media. Not that he had an option! 🙂
